EU Council Meeting, 25-26 September 2014

CONTAMINANTS  – Derogation for traditionally smoked food - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Council discussions

The following is an extract from the minutes of the Competiveness Council meeting held on 25th – 26th September 2014:

The Council decided not to oppose the adoption of a regulation excluding traditionally smoked meat and meat products and/or fish and fishery products in certain member states from the application of lower maximum levels for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for three years as of 1 September 2014. This is to prevent such traditionally smoked products disappearing from the market, resulting in the closure of many small and medium sized enterprises.

The Commission regulation is subject to the regulatory procedure with scrutiny. This means that now that the Council has given its consent, the Commission may adopt it, unless the European Parliament objects.
